Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference (DCYC): A two-day conference/retreat for grades 9 – 12 Catholic Youth. DCYC will be held January 17 – 19, 2014 at the Waco Convention Center. We would love to take a delegation of Sacred Heart of Rockne youth to this program this year. DCYC is packed with activities such as sessions in the main hall with keynote speakers, smaller workshops, a special seniors-only meal with Bishop Vasquez, and fun free time activities. DCYC also offers many sacramental opportunities such as Reconciliation, Adoration, daily Mass, and Sunday Mass with Bishop Joe Vasquez. If your 9 – 12 grade student is interested, please get a registration packet from Jackie May. We need to get our registration submitted by mid‑December, so I would like to have a commitment by December 11.
Stroke Scan, Inc. will be at Sacred Heart parish hall performing eight ultrasound screenings on Thursday, December 5. These eight screenings will be offered to you for $135. If you pre-register for the $135 complete package you will also receive an Atrial Fibrillation screening free of charge. Pre-registration is necessary and appointments are limited. Please call 1-866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment
Bernard Goertz, affectionately “Father Ben” to us here in the Sacred Heart parish, was a beloved member of the Rockne community.
Born on July 4, 1928 to locals Joe and Anna Goertz, Bernard became a Roman Catholic priest at the age of 24. For the next 60 years he faithfully carried out his duties as a Catholic priest, which included 23 years as an Army chaplain. He entered into rest on February 14, 2012.
Among his lasting legacies, Father Ben established the Father Bernard C. Goertz Scholarship fund to aid local youth with getting a college education.
Qualifications for the Father Bernard C. Goertz Scholarship are:
- You must have graduated from a B.I.S.D. (Bastrop Independent School District) affiliated high school.
- You must either live in Rockne or have ancestral roots in the Rockne community.
That’s it. No minimum GPA. No inquiries about clubs or extracurricular activities. Father Ben understood the value of a college education and wanted to help as many local youth as possible achieve that goal. That’s the type of man that he was.
If you are a student who is interested in applying for the Father Bernard C. Goertz Scholarship, please speak with your high school counselor. They will be able to provide you with the necessary application.
